Monumental Tombs of Selca, an important part of cultural heritage

Besides coastal tourism, Albania also has much to offer inland. The eastern part of the country attracts many visitors, particularly the Korça region, known for its climate, cuisine, and abundant cultural riches.

One of the heritage sites that should not be missed is the Monumental Tombs of Selca. They are located on the eastern slope of the hill called Gradishta, where the remains of the Illyrian city of Lower Selca are found.

The tombs are situated between the acropolis and the outer neighborhoods of the ancient city. They are carved into the rock face of the hill and date back to the 4th-3rd centuries BC.

Excavations have revealed five monumental tombs grouped into three zones, about 100 meters apart from each other. In the first zone, tombs no. 1, 2, and 3 are carved into the rock; in the second zone, tomb no. 4 is also rock-carved; and in the third zone, tomb no. 5 is built with a stone vault.

The Monumental Tombs of Selca are a significant part of the Illyrian city of Lower Selca, representing the most renowned architectural aspect of this city. Their construction period coincides with the city’s peak development era.
