Archaeological Wealth of the Lower Drin Valley amazes archaeologists

The valuable archaeological wealth of the Lower Drin Valley, particularly the Koman settlement, is gradually coming to light.

The research-archaeological expedition conducted this July aims to continue excavations in the central necropolis of Koman, one of the largest medieval cemeteries in the country and one of the best known in the Western Balkans. This site serves as the main source of data about the population from the 6th to the 14th centuries.

Through this project, the data and material culture will provide and create the opportunity to learn more about the topographical organization of the cemetery, funeral rites, paleodemography (diet, diseases, genetics, mobility), social codes, the level of development reached, and the production and inter-regional exchanges of the population.

This important research project is implemented and supported by CNRS Paris/Orient et Méditerranée École Française de Rome under the direction of Etleva Nallbani, Elvana Metalla, the Institute of Archaeology, the Academy of Sciences of Albania, Jocelyne Desideri, Université de Genève, and Regional Directory of Cultural Heritage of Shkodër.
