Frederik Rreshpja: “When I am sad I write. That’s why I write a lot.” Today is the birthday of the great lyric poet Frederik Rreshpja

“Rreshpja was not just a poet who wrote poetry; he lived poetically. Strangely enough, as hard as his life was, his poetic expression became equally powerful.” Frederik Rreshpja was an unusual poet who died in solitude. “When we talk about Rreshpja, we must first understand that we are dealing with a poet of aesthetic literature. He is a modern poet within the classical tradition, and I would go further to say that he is the modern Esenin of Albanian literature,” said writer Petrit Palushi.

Life

Frederik Rreshpja was born in Shkodër on July 19, 1940, into a family originating from Dukagjin. He was a lyrical poet, essayist, publicist, and publisher. His pen is among the most representative of Albanian verse. He spent his childhood in the neighborhood of Mëhalla e Çakajve. He completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown at the “29 Nëntori” gymnasium. He pursued university studies by correspondence at the Pedagogical Institute in Tirana. He worked in civil registry in Dajç, near the Buna River, and later as a cultural officer at the Wood Combine in Shkodër.

Works

His first poem was dedicated to his mother, whom he affectionately called File. In 1967, Adriatik Kallulli published his poetry collection “Rapsodi shqiptare.” The following year saw the publication of “Tri përralla për fëmijë” and “Trimi i fshatit Bardhë,” followed by “Eranda” in 1969. He published the novel “Zëri i largët i kasolles” in 1972, the play “Ëndrra e tokës” and “Trofta hutaqe” in 1973, and returned to poetry with the collection “Në këtë qytet” in the same year. His poem “Topi fushor” was included in the most important official anthology of the time. His first literary work, the poetry collection “Rapsodi shqiptare,” was published in 1967, but he was arrested again a year later. His publications and writings in the periodicals of the time were well received by critics, although this did not last long. According to Primo Shllaku, Rreshpja was a novice of socialist realism up to this phase of his creativity.
