The “House with Two Peristyles” in Ancient Finiq

One of the notable attractions of the ancient city of Finiq is the “House with Two Peristyles,” a remarkable site that warrants close inspection.

Visitors to southern Albania this summer can explore the archaeological park of Finiq to gain insight into the lifestyle of the aristocratic class in ancient cities.

The house derives its name from its two interior courtyards, each surrounded by a colonnade. It was the residence of the affluent inhabitants of ancient Finiq.

Constructed in the 3rd century BC, the “House with Two Peristyles” remained in use until the 3rd century AD.

During the early centuries AD, the house was expanded with additional rooms. Notably, the interior walls were adorned with mural paintings, adding to its grandeur.

The “Peristyle House” style was prevalent in Southern Illyria, with similar structures found in Bylis and Antigoneia as well as Finiq.

The “House with Two Peristyles” in Finiq stands as the best-preserved example of this architectural style.
